Maybe you have felt it lately. You open your phone and everyone is talking about artificial intelligence. A friend says he bought a tech stock and it doubled. The news says AI is changing everything. And a small worried voice in your head says the same thing it says to a lot of people right now: the boat already left, and you are standing on the dock watching it go.
I talk to people who feel exactly that. They are not reckless. They are careful, hardworking, and a little scared. They do not want to chase something at the top and get burned, but they also do not want to be the one person who missed the biggest thing of their lifetime. So they freeze. They do nothing, and the worry just sits there.
If that is you, I want to tell you a story. It is more than a hundred years old, and it explains everything.

In 1849, gold was found in California, and the world lost its mind. Thousands of people packed up everything they owned and rushed west to dig. They pictured themselves striking it rich and never working again. Most of them did not. Most went home with empty pockets, sore backs, and broken dreams.
But a few people got rich. Quietly, steadily, almost boringly rich. And here is the strange part. They were not the ones digging for gold.
They were the ones who sold the shovels. They sold the picks, the boots, the tents, and the food. One man named Levi Strauss showed up and sold sturdy work pants to the miners. You are probably wearing his idea right now, because that company became Levi's. He never found a single nugget of gold. He just figured out that no matter who struck it rich and who went home broke, every single person rushing west needed pants, tools, and a meal.
That is the whole secret. When everyone is racing to dig, you do not have to guess who finds the gold. You sell the shovels, because everybody digging needs one.
Right now, artificial intelligence is the gold rush. And just like 1849, everyone is trying to guess who finds the gold. Which company wins? Which stock makes me rich? People are betting their savings on names they read about last week.
Here is the honest truth, and I say it because you deserve honesty over a sales pitch. Picking the winning AI company is really, really hard. Even the experts get it wrong. Not long ago, the smart money was sure it knew which companies would win. Then a surprise new product showed up out of nowhere and erased almost a trillion dollars of value in a few days. The technology is real and it is here to stay. But guessing which company comes out on top is a coin flip, and you are being asked to call it in the air.
So stop trying. Sell the shovels instead.

AI does not run on excitement. It runs on real, physical stuff. It runs on electricity, and a lot of it. One big AI data centre can use as much power as a small city. Those buildings get blazing hot, so they need cold air and fresh water to cool down. The computer chips inside them are built from metals like copper and rare minerals that only come out of the ground in a few places on earth.
None of that is optional. It does not matter which AI company wins. Every single one of them needs power, water, cooling, and metal to run at all. Those are the shovels of this gold rush. And the demand is not small. The International Energy Agency projects that electricity consumption by data centres worldwide will more than double by 2030.
So the question stops being "which company do I pick?" and becomes "who sells the shovels?"

The answer, more than most people realize, is Canada.
We have the metals in the ground. Nickel, copper, rare earths, and the critical minerals that go into every chip and every cable. The International Energy Agency identified Canada as a leading supplier of these minerals to the world in its 2024 Critical Minerals Outlook. We have huge amounts of clean power from hydro and nuclear, which is exactly what these power-hungry data centres are hunting for. And we have the one thing you cannot build or fake: cold air and fresh water, sitting in abundance across the north, ready to cool the machines that everyone is racing to build.
Cold, water, power, and rock. Very few places on earth have all four. We do.
Now let me be straight with you, because a good story should not hide the scary part.
Some very serious people think the AI boom has gone too far. The head of the Bank of Canada has warned that money is pouring into these bets so fast that it could be inflating a bubble, the same kind of overheating we saw right before past crashes. He may be right. Prices could fall. That fear is real, and ignoring it would be foolish.
But think back to the gold rush. When the gold ran out and the dreamers went home broke, what happened to the man selling pants and shovels? He was fine. He was always fine. People still needed to eat and work no matter what.
It is the same here. A hot AI stock can crash to nothing. But copper does not crash to nothing. Electricity does not crash to nothing. Even if the wild stock prices cool off, the world still needs power and metal to keep building. The diggers come and go. The people who sold the shovels are still standing.
You did not miss the boat. You were just looking at the wrong boat the whole time.
You do not have to guess which AI company wins. That is the hard bet, and even the pros lose it. The easier bet is that AI is here to stay, that it runs on energy and raw materials, and that Canada is rich in exactly those things. You do not have to find the gold. You just have to notice that everybody digging needs a shovel, and we happen to make them.
If you have been frozen, watching from the dock and feeling behind, I hope this gives you a different way to see it. Not a reason to panic and not a reason to chase. Just a calmer, smarter place to stand.
